My Project

In the fall my 8th-grade students will be engaging in a unit that has them study novels in verse. The aim of the unit is to listen to and learn from authors whose expertise is telling a dynamic and powerful story through poetic devices using figurative language. By the end of the unit, students compose a three-poem narrative arc which they perform for their classmates.

This is the third year that I will be teaching this unit to my 8th graders and I feel like each year I have become a bit better at facilitating their learning- this year I want to put these books in the kid's hands.

Last year we relied on digital copies of most of the texts, but to be honest, most of us enjoy having the actual hardbound book to read from- we have spent so much time on our devices over the past few years.

These books will mainly be used for independent reading and modeling purposes and then they will be added to our classroom library so that my 6th grade readers can enjoy the texts, too. Novels in verse are so powerful because they provide opportunities for children of diverse reading levels to grapple with complex ideas.
