Would you rather read poetry or prose?

Many people turn to the dynamic structure of poetry, while others prefer the simplicity of an author’s voice guiding them through prose. A novel in verse captures the essence of both poetry and prose, while providing students with writing that challenges them to think deeply about the power of words and figurative language. When reading poetry in these new books, students are challenged to critically engage in making meaning of the words by developing images in their minds, rather than being told or shown, as is often done in prose. Through an author’s carefully selected words, one learns to feel the character’s emotions. Rather than examining a stand-alone poem, students navigate a full plot using dynamic word choices to better understand conflict, characterization, and themes, while being exposed to another form of literature.
