I am one of two Library Media Specialists at my high school, an urban public school serving grades 9-12. I am responsible for curating materials, technology education and maintenance, along with all facets of the Library's day to day operation.
More than sixty-five percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch.
A vast number are English Language Learners and many are first generation Americans. 30% of our student population identifies as Latino or of Hispanic origin. They are athletes, musicians, actors, and artists. Over fifteen hundred students walk the same halls I did. I am proud to live and teach in the same community I grew up in and where I am raising my son.
My Project
Despite one-third of our student population being Latino, we currently have just one novel in Spanish. Many Spanish-speaking students come to the Library to check out a book only to find out we do not have materials in Spanish. Our one novel is an older, translated romance novel. These novels are more relevant to my students and higher interest.
I want to foster a love of reading in my students, no matter what their native language might be.
Having novels in Spanish will help encourage students who are not yet proficient in English to read!
