Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a low-income but highly spirited high school. The 400 students are almost 100% Black and Hispanic, with a few Middle Eastern and a few Asian students.

Many of our students do not read novels because they do not see people who look like them on the covers.

We can change this by creating a library of novels that the students feel connect to them and to their life experiences!

This library will be available to all students before and after school, as well as during lunch time. They will be encouraged to sign out books and to take them home to share what they are reading with their families.

My Project

So many of our students say they do not like to read. It is no wonder. Our classrooms lack novels about characters who look like our students. Students will be more likely to pick up novels to read for pleasure if the characters on the covers look like them.

The goal of this project is to create a library of books that our students will want to pick up and read because they feel a connection to the characters.

Once they begin reading, my students can begin discussing the books and practice literary circles that will help them develop college-level academic skills. (Requesting 3 copies of each novel will allow the students to do this in small groups!)

Help us to make this happen by funding our Black, Latinx, Asian, and Middle Eastern teen library! (Many of the books requested are hardcover books so they can survive the journey to and from school in a teenager's backpack!)
