My Students

My students are special because they are eager and love reading. These students come from a very diverse background, and have expressed their enjoyment of reading chapter books with a compelling plot of characters that resemble them and they can relate to.

My students are sixth graders between the ages of eleven to twelve.

My students demographics are African American and Hispanic and our school is a Title I school that is apart of the Houston Independent Schools District in South Houston, Texas.

My Project

The novels The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake will be used as a novel study in my 6th grade English Language Arts classroom. This novel will allow students to read an authentic book that will push students thinking through critical thinking and discussions on social action, self-reflection, and societal issues.

Also, The Skin I'm In will help students to develop a love for reading and open doors to an amazing world through a vivid story.

The novel will allow students to respond to writing prompts that encourage creativity and reading that will prompt critical thinking. Overall, The Skin I'm In will serve multiple purposes to enrich the reading and classroom experience for all students.
