Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Here at my School in Staten Island, we inspire our girls to value their integrity, while becoming innovators to leave a positive impact on their community. Secondly, we value the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and different needs of all of our students to empower them in this ever changing world. As the humanities teacher, special educator and SEL Lead; I create and modify curriculums to be culturally responsive and promote authentic engagement. Within humanities, our girls learn literacy skills while engaging in social issues throughout history up to present day. Representing all my students culturally and linguistically through rigorous lessons is essential, however exposing students to other cultures an opportunity to make connections and deeply express their identity.

Our school opened their doors in September of 2022 as the first girls public school in our borough, and this year we are welcoming 70 6th grade students and their families.

As we are grow each year, we need support with growing our classrooms with rigorous and engaging class novels. Exposing students to experiences through literature is our first step of being innovators. Furthermore, with your help we will be able to enrich our curriculums with novels that support 6th grade standards and include themes that express identity, empathy and courage. My goal as an educator is to meet my students where they are and make use of literature to develop their critical thinking skills and become more self aware of who they are as students and leaders.
