Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work for a program that serves students who have failed multiple classes. We travel to three different schools and provide academic recovery to anywhere between 200-400 students in the school year. We try to serve the needs of students in a holistic approach. This means we make sure that we focus on trying to change students' perspectives of their academic identities. There are a variety of ways in which we do this. One way is practice mindfulness in the classroom. We try to check-in with students and focus on how emotionally they are doing along with checking in with them about their grade and progress in their classes. We reach out to families weekly to give them progress reports to ensure they understand how their students are performing.

Another way we make sure we are trying to make a difference is by making sure that students can be fully nourished while being in our classes.

Being in 90 minute classes can be a challenge for a variety of reasons, one of them is being hungry. We want to make sure that students can fuel their minds and bodies while being in class and that is why we are seeking support in the form of food supplies. The snacks that we can provide helps us to ensure students feel full and fueled to learn in our classes.

We want to make sure that our students feel valued and have the capacity to learn and not feel distracted by hunger. We want to make sure that students who are at the highest risk of not graduating have a fighting chance. And stay motivated to come to class and stay in class so they can receive the credits they need.
