My Students

Learning. It's what we are doing in our first grade class every day! We need to be able to organize that learning concretely, and we can do that through the use of interactive notebooks.

In our classroom, we are writers.

We are readers. We are mathematicians. We are scientists. We are geologists. We are historians. My students are also only first graders. Sometimes they get overwhelmed with all of the grade-level expectations and state standards because, let's face it, there are a lot of them! A high percentage of my students come from a low socioeconomic status, and every student in my class qualifies for free meals at school. Many of my students are English Language Learners. Several of those children come from large families, and they may not receive the individualized learning experiences at home that we all hope that they do. My goal is to ensure that the learning experiences that they receive in my classroom are concrete and something on which the students can look back and build.

My Project

You can help me create authentic, concrete learning experiences for my students by helping to provide notebooks to the students. These notebooks will become an interactive tool created by the students throughout the course of their learning in my classroom. With these resources, each child will have a Writer's Notebook to practice skills that real authors use during our Writer's Workshop. The children will have Reader's Notebooks to jot their ideas, wonderings, and understandings about texts as they read during Reader's Workshop. A Word Study Notebook is essential for students to learn vocabulary and develop an understanding of English words, and an Interactive Math Notebook is a great place for students to learn about foundational mathematical concepts and build upon those critical skills. In addition to having a place to organize their learning, my first graders will learn how books are organized with Tables of Contents and pages in order from front to back.

This project is important because students need resources for learning.

Those resources are far more powerful when they are created by the students themselves. Do you remember any of the textbooks that you had in elementary school? I do not; I do remember my green spiral notebook that served as my writing notebook when I was young. I remember how that single notebook made it to and from school everyday even if nothing else did. Help these children make learning memorable and the skills concrete.
