My Students

My students attend school and want to do well, but many lack the resources and outside support they need to encourage them to soar. They may be students on the margins, but they are also bright young people who, given the the chance, will be the ones to lead us into a brighter future.

Our students come from a high poverty area, where gangs, drugs, and unemployment are epidemic, but they are still seen as some of the nicest students in our district.

Visitors are often amazed at how our students offer assistance to complete strangers. At ArtLab, the average reading level of our students is 4th grade, and 50% of our freshman will never graduate. Many of them are new to this country. Still, they come to school every day hoping that today will be the day when they start to understand concepts, grasp subject matters and become successful in their pursuits.

My Project

Writers workshop allows students to write about what they want to and explore different genres, while learning structure, in a standards based environment. I've been teaching fifteen years and writers workshop is the only way I've truly found that improves their ability to express themselves successfully.

When I ask students to buy notebooks for my class, for many this is a struggle.

I often hear, "Can this wait till one of my parents get paid?" or "Can't we just use school paper? My parents just don't have the money for this". By donating to this project, my students will know that there are many out in the world who believe in them.
