My Students

I work in a low-income school and our program is an at-risk Pre-K. At-risk factors include low-income, single family homes, incarcerated parent, English as a second language. 32% of my students also qualify for my program by needing an IEP to help to with their academic, social, and health needs.

I have two sessions, AM and PM Pre-K classes, with 40 students total.

My students range in age from 3-5 years, and are energetic, talkative, caring, and social. Every student deserves enough hands-on materials to help them learn the skills and concepts necessary to be successful in Kindergarten.

My Project

The materials in this project will help my students learn pre-literacy and pre-reading skills. The magnetic boards in this project are hands-on activities that allow my students to strengthen their fine motor skills, and learn to identify and name upper and lower case letters.

These materials will not only teach my students literacy skills, but also about cause and effect!

The Magnatab letter boards will be used during small groups and centers for children to use independently to practice forming letters of the alphabet. When finished, they can learn to use the magnetic pencils to "erase" their writing by repelling the magnetic balls so it clears the board and they can start again. This one little board teaches both science AND literacy skills.

Since these boards are intended to use independently, it can also help students work on increasing their attention span when working on tasks.

Students learn best through hands-on activities in which they can use all of their senses. They need to touch, move, and manipulate items to help learn and remember new concepts. Preschool should be fun and engaging through games and activities! I need more materials in my classroom to help students stay engaged and excited.
