Not Just Pretend: Dramatic Play and Cooperative Games for Learning

My Project

The students in my classroom were, for the most part, less than 15 months old when the COVID-19 shutdowns began. They missed out on Mommy and Me Groups, storytime at the library, toddler playdates, and even seeing extended families in person - all for the vital reason of staying healthy and safe, but with the downside of missing some formative experiences for social-emotional learning.

All of those pandemic setbacks can be caught up - yes, all of them!

With carefully planned environments that support their curiosity and natural interests, our early childhood classroom can show them how to positively interact with others, take on new perspectives, share feelings, and work together. This project asks for a multicultural dollhouse and accessories, which children will use to take on the roles of other family members, all while working through familiar family problems, feelings, and joys. Likewise, our dress-up outfits (and a rack to support them) give children the chance to pretend to be someone that makes a difference in our community: firefighters, chefs, healthcare professionals, and more. Trains, cars, and trucks will give us the chance to play together with small 'models' of our community, and the pretend food is perfect for children to learn how to serve each other (and learn some vocabulary!) Lastly, the cooperative games in the request will provide us with time to practice specific skills such as counting, shape identification, and turn-taking, all in a controlled environment that doesn't focus on one 'winner', but many.

With your support, our children will continue to make gains in their understanding of the world around them - no matter how tricky their toddlerhood might have been.
