My Students

Many of the students at my school are at once wonderful and troubled; curious and mistrusting; giving and needy; and worldly and sheltered. The circumstance of their young lives often prevents them from fully achieving academic success. The availability of opportunities to expand their knowledge beyond basic curriculum is many times stunted. It is through resources such as DonorsChoose.Org, that teachers such as myself are able to support students to gain more than an "ordinary" education.

Children thrive high interest, hands-on engaging activities, and acquiring the materials requested bolsters the passion to learn.

Oftentimes, despite our best efforts as educators, students are impacted by environmental issues over which we have no control.

My Project

Imagine a student reporter - chronicling their lives! As a fun and expansive homework assignment, students will film their lives literally looking through a different lens. The end result is a compilation of captured moments for student broadcast. With assigned prompts~ "dinnertime," "pets," "mom at work," "a calm place," "my journey to school," etc., students will film and present their short videos that will be shown in class, and coupled with a narrative writing assignment. The cameras will be shared among students on a rotating basis, and monthly, a student will be chosen to utilize the watch for more in-depth annals ~ and feel cool doing that!

As student reporters, these budding photo-journalists, directors, writers, cinematographers and editors will experience learning and honing a multifarious skill that may someday be channeled into, or optioned as a choice of career!

Guided assignments and clear rubrics and parameters will help students drill down to the specific assignments and increase their capacity for focus, independence, communicating, time management, compassion, and sharing.

Real news- the current events of my students' lives - will combat the deluge of "fake news" and perhaps alter the stereotypes that are often associated with the children of this school. Having an opportunity to showcase the aspects of their lives that are authentic and meaningful may even invite discourse that results in a new and powerful life trajectory!
