My Students

Imagine you are a young drummer. How would you like to have two BRAND NEW drums sitting in front of you? They were given to your school. BUT YOU CANNOT PLAY THEM! Why? Nothing to play them with. You lack the right sticks and your band director can't let you use something else, it could damage them.

We are an inner city Title I school.

I teach band in grades 4-8. My young bands, the 4-6 grades are much larger, and the opportunities for them are going to be great. My older students are suffering from small numbers in their grades, but are still amazingly hard workers and great musicians. They are very smart and hard working kids. They are forging their own destiny.

My Project

I am asking for timpani mallets, concert bass drum mallets and marching bass drum mallets. The timpani mallets are essential since we just received our first timpani through donorschoose! The marching drum mallets are to replace the ones broken at our last parade (they were playing their hearts out). The concert bass drum mallets are for our new bass drum, also given to us through donorschoose!

I want my students to have to look at the mallets, feel the differences, hear the differences and know how to identify them.

I also do not want to have to replace heads on very expensive drums because they used the wrong mallet. They try hard, so I just need to give them the resources to know what is best.
