Help me give my students grocery items to help them problem solve using real life situations. These items will make their shopping/learning experience very motivational and realistic.
Hi. My name is Amy Nordstrom. I am a 5th-grade special education teacher. The items I am requesting will help enhance the store that I have created in my classroom for my students to have hands-on learning experiences. I have received some funding from our PTO organization, but more help will allow me to have more products in the store to help kids with real-world shopping and problem-solving situations. My master's degree capstone project was titled, "The Positive Effects of Problem Solving on 5th Graders with Learning Disabilities using Real World Situations." I am excited to have started this store, but could use more products to make it more functional and closer to reality than its current status. In addition, I do have students who lack motivation, so I use the store as an incentive to work, participate, and be a positive model in class. Students then can shop in the store. I often have students who shop for items (or ask for specific items) that are healthier and have more substance, not choosing candy, as these are items they are lacking in their lives. Having more choices for food and drinks that are not candy and high-sugar juices (typical items found at Dollar Tree), will help my students be healthier and happier, all while learning as they earn shopping privileges. The store in general is motivating for students as they feel it is a fun way to learn. Also, working in a realistic setting increases their chances to generalize their learning. Finally, the 5th-grade general education teachers on my team recently started a classroom economy reward system and I would like to be able to use my classroom as part of the learning and reward process.
