Just like a lot of classrooms, we have limited space for more books. Unlike other classrooms, we have limited access to our school library. Although it has grown immensely in the past two years, it still consists of a few book shelves in the corner of a computer lab.
I teach at a fine and performing arts charter school in Michigan, a state with a rather large unemployment rate.
Some of my students have parents who have been laid off for years. They are struggling more than they ever have before. However, you would not know it if you met my students. They remain optimistic and have an unbelievable zest for life. Additionally, I have never had a group of students who enjoys reading as much as my group this year. Recently, I have had students get "hooked" on a series. As soon as they tell me they have read every book in that series that our class has, I immediately get online to order them the next book, because it is my responsibility to foster a love for reading.
My Project
This Nook will solve two very different problems we have: limited space and limited funds. I am of the belief that you can never have too many books. For this reason, I have spent nearly every summer of my life picking up good books at garage sales. Unfortunately, there are more good books in the world than there is space on our shelves. The Nook Color has impeccable image quality, allowing the students to feel more like they are reading a traditional paper book. I will be able to have up to six Nooks on one account, allowing me to buy one copy of an electronic book for six different Nooks. That's essentially six books for the price of one and that's an offer that can't be beat!
Having the ability to store hundreds of books in this tiny device would be amazing.
Having the ability to buy six books for the price of one would be even more amazing. Giving my students access to any book they could imagine through the Nook is beyond amazing. That would be a gift which would inspire feelings that cannot be put in to words. Please give my students this gift.
