This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you think back to the first time you used a computer in a classroom? Do you remember actual floppy disks? My students are at the brink of new reading technology that they have not come in contact with. E-readers have taken over; magazines, books, and even newspapers have gone digital.
My students primarily come from low socioeconomic households where moms and dads have several jobs just to keep afloat of the bills.
Little money is spent on classroom supplies. Above the setbacks my students come to class everyday in hope to get an education and break away from the monotony of their lives.
My middle schoolers arrive to our magnet school bright and early at 7:45 and work through 2:15 in the afternoon. All students are required to take a reading class and they have one period of "relaxation" or as we call it electives.
Overall, my students come from all walks of life. Where there is one challenging student, there are five that truly prove that they are just yearning for knowledge. The benefits of being a magnet school is the influx of critical thinkers in our magnet classes. It is truly a pleasure to work at my school.
My Project
By using digital readers I hope to spark my students' reading interest. My students are born in the digital age and they spend most of their day using some kind of electronic device. I'd like to expose my students to e-readers and how electronics can be used to expand their knowledge. The goal of every teacher is to create critical thinkers that can read and reflect and interact with others about what they are reading. Using these e-readers students can feel a part of a new-age book club. A place where they can read a book and share and discuss with a group of peers.
As a teacher that is just begging to spread her wings in the subject area of reading, I'd like to bend the rules of what students define as typical.
I want my students to view reading as an enjoyable treat not as an assignment they are forced to complete. I want to instill a love of reading in each child.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
