My Students

I have the privilege of working with 3 and 4 year students with special needs. Many are nonverbal due to autism or intellectual disability. We communicate through pictures and sign language. We would love to have an iPad as another means of supporting our ability to better communicate and learn.

My students are from a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.

They are all eager to come to school and learn as we have many resources available to them in our classroom that they do not have at home. They do not have computers or tablets that some homes are able to provide their children. All the parents would like to have these resources available for their child at home, but are unable to do so as it's more important to get food on the table and provide housing. The students in my class have a variety of disabilities including developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism, and CP. The level of severity varies impacting the ability to learn. My classroom is well-furnished with learning materials, but I am lacking in the area of technology to support development and growth across the cognitive and language domains.

My Project

The Apple iPad has a large number of apps that are developmentally appropriate for the special needs preschool student. Plus, many of them are free. I have a list of recommended apps from other ECSE teachers using them in their classrooms. These apps are engaging and beneficial for the children's growth and development. An iPad would be used throughout the day with all the students getting a turn. Students having greater communication needs (presently I have four) would have more time using it to promote language development. I am asking for one iPad to start, but eventually hope to add several more so students with greater communication needs will have more time using it.

Donations to this project will technologically improve my classroom.

An iPad will give nonverbal students another means to develop communication. Having the ability to express oneself, whether verbally or nonverbally, empowers a person. Not being able to communicate creates anxiety, frustration, and anger. I believe having an iPad in my classroom would contribute to more effective communication with nonverbal students, thus creating a more positive classroom environment.
