Nonverbal Communication With an iPad!

My Students

Every day my students rush into my classroom excited to build our classroom community into a family. Our classroom is a safe place for them to explore learning and grow their skills.

All of my students are English Language Learners and they are all also diagnosed with autism.

My students live in an area of highest poverty in town and 100% of the students at our school receive a free lunch. Despite these challenges, my students are amazing kids!

My students' behaviors can be very challenging and we need some help with some additional resources to help my kiddos stay regulated and focused throughout the day.

My Project

iPads have had a transformative effect in special education classrooms all across the world. I currently have a nonverbal student who would greatly benefit from using the accessibility tools, apps, and the functional design of the iPad in class. We borrowed an iPad from an OT teacher and she was able to communicate and work more than we have ever seen! We are urgently in need of technology like this to help my students achieve, communicate, and learn!

My students would really benefit from an iPad Pro to help them communicate, learn how to read, write, and do math, and to help them regulate their bodies to pay attention in class.

The iPad Pro and Apple Pencil will be a very motivating tool that is also adaptive in nature, to allow my students to work on difficult fine motor classroom activities in an engaging way.

All of my students will be able to benefit from using the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil and I plan to use it very intentionally as a communication device and a supplemental support for my nonverbal student's learning.
