Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are growing up in unprecedented times under the unique pressures of an under-resourced community in South-Central Los Angeles. Almost all of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and the ethnic and racial breakdown is 97% Hispanic, 2% Black/African-American, and 1% White and Asian.

Many of my students are first-generation Americans and come to my school far below grade level in reading and writing.

My school is tasked with bringing our scholars up to grade level before they enter high school. The teachers at my school work tirelessly to provide supports to help our scholars access grade-level material, and the students rise to the occasion and often see gains of multiple grade levels in just a year of instruction.

Returning to in-person instruction is exciting for my students, and although we know they've fallen further behind than they were before and that online instruction only exacerbated the abundant inequity in education, I know that my scholars will continue to put in the work and do amazing things.

My Project

Middle school is a critical time for developing readers. These years usually determine whether a child will read throughout their life or not. Many middle school students believe that reading is not for them because they are not captivated by a typical fictional story. Enter: nonfiction.

Nonfiction books often engage readers where fictional stories cannot.

Nonfiction titles allow students to explore their interests and often include a visual element that helps readers who struggle navigating entire pages of text. All in all, nonfiction books encourage students to become lifelong learners and explore the things that interest them all while developing their reading skills.
