This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about the type of material you read on a daily basis. Isn't most of it nonfiction? So why do most kids learn how to read by reading fiction stories? Most fiction stories are fun to read, but kids also need to learn HOW to read nonfiction books. So let's start them young!

I have 25 students in my class.

14 of them are English language learners, and the majority are on free or reduced lunch. My students are from a Title I school. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged circumstances. Even though they face economic challenges, they come to school each day eager to learn new things.

My Project

This set of nonfiction books is amazing. It introduces early readers to nonfiction text. They are high interest books that provide tons of sight-word practice. Each book features full-color photos and simple text that's entirely made up of sight-words and rebus pictures, plus nonfiction topics that children love . . . farm animals, the five senses, seeds, leaves. As students explore each of the 20 books, they focus on 4-10 new sight words at a time. My students will be so excited to read and learn at the same time.

My students will benefit from this project year after year. The kids who are readers will love these books at the beginning of the year, and my struggling readers will use them throughout the year.
