My Students

My young students need nonfiction magazines so they can learn about their world and the fascinating science behind it. Our students are excited to learn, curious, innovative, playful, kind, and fun! Our classroom is comprised of forty-eight 2nd and 3rd-grade students at a charter school in southern California. We do a lot of projects with partners or in cooperative groups of four so students learn how to work as a team.

We are also a magnet school so students from many different backgrounds and cultures get to know each other.

We set high standards and enjoy the journey to reach them.

My Project

All readers need to be inspired! We want to give our students Scholastic News and Science News magazines to introduce them to the exciting world of nonfiction. Without leaving the classroom, they'll get to experience the winter wonderland of Harbin, China, hang with sloths in Costa Rica, and discover King Tut's curse.

The most interesting and inspiring stories are the ones from real life!

These colorful and vibrant magazines bring to life inventors, new museums, cultures, artists, environmental issues and more. During Reader's Workshop, our students will read Scholastic News and get to know the world, the people in it, and how things work. The students will discover the possibilities of their world and within themselves. It will connect some students to their passion and spark a lifelong love of reading in others.
