My Students

Nonfiction text is what the Common Core would like our students to read more of on a daily basis and to be exposed to wide varieties of nonfiction text. They need to be able to to read nonfiction article,s as well as books.

My kids are from low income families that are either Latinos or African Americans.

My school is located in the inner city and we provide free breakfast and lunches for about 900 students. I never know what students I will get in my class each year. They bring joys, challenges, and excitement. Some of them comes in ready, some come in hungry and scared, and some have already decided that school is not for them. However, in their own time; they all want to learn.

My Project

The Scholastic News subscriptions will give my students their first opportunity to own a magazine and to have the opportunity to take it home to share with their family. This magazine will be an additional nonfiction resource where the students can find model texts of nonfiction paragraphs that can be used to identify nonfiction text features in the articles. This will be a great resource for my students to use during writing workshop for nonfiction texts. Additionally, the subscription includes an additional science component that will provide additional information for my students to discuss and to learn about. This resource will provide my students the opportunity to increase their comprehension, vocabulary, provide additional exposure to social studies/science, and bring excitement of reading nonfiction texts that is different from a book or a textbook.

It is not often that my students will spend money on buying books or magazines.

Often, only a few of my students will order books from Scholastic book orders while the others just look on because their parents can't afford it. Also, borrowing books is often a hardship too because some parents don't have time or the transportation to get to the library to borrow books for them. This donation will give every student a chance to own their own magazine and be able to take it home.
