My Students

Have you ever heard a story and then found out that it was true? How much more interesting did the story become to you at that moment you found out it was true? Please consider reading about my project to increase nonfiction text in my class using interactive read alouds and literature circles.

My students are fifth graders who live in a rural area and love learning about the stories of real people.

So far this year we have read The Story of Ruby Bridges, The Librarian of Basra (a true story of a librarian in Iraq who does her best to save her library), The Man Who Walked Between the Towers (a true story of a man who walked across a tight rope between the world trade center towers when they were constructed), and Two Bobbies (a true story of a dog and cat who help each other survive after Hurricane Katrina). After these read alouds, students applaud the book and actively talk about the stories at lunch and outside of schools. These students are excited for read alouds everyday now and without regards to the illustration on a cover students always ask me if the book we are reading is true. They get very excited if it is. Resources from this project will be shared among the fifth grade team at my school to promote student engagement with nonfiction texts.

My Project

The resources requested by this DonorsChoose project will help support students as they continue to read nonfiction texts. Using nonfiction texts as often as possible is a recommendation made by the new common core curriculum that is being implemented at my school and nationwide. The resources of this project will enable students to begin literature circles with nonfiction texts. I have carefully reviewed and researched the books selected for this project to use as mentor texts for reading nonfiction and of course the longer titles for literature circles. The texts cover a variety of topics from health, African American history, mysteries, and contemporary stories such as Three Cups of Tea: Young Reader's Edition.

Fifth grade is a time when students are really becoming interested in the stories of other people.

Please help support them as they continue on their journey through fifth grade learning about real people and events.
