My Students

My sixth grade class is an integrated co-teaching model comprised of thirty students with and without disabilities.

My students are open-minded, kind, empathetic, compassionate, and excited to learn when they come into the classroom.

Books are transformative and greatly impactful to their lives. They love to read, and they are known for getting sucked into a good book. They are always hungry to get more great books to read, and are always asking for recommendations for what to read next!

My Project

My students are avid readers of graphic novels. Thanks to the generous donations from a project that was funded, I was able to provide my students with graphic novels to enjoy.

Something as a school that we are lacking are accessible nonfiction texts, especially for students who need support with comprehension.

My goal in creating this project is to provide graphic nonfiction texts for my students so that they may grow their nonfiction reading skills in a way that is accessible to them. According to Mary Ehrenworth of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, comprehension of nonfiction texts decreases at least three levels from fiction texts. I want my students to be able to practice learning essential nonfiction reading strategies with texts that they can understand and enjoy!
