Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

During the pandemic, I learned that many children in my community don't have a single children's book at home. Among those that do, many do not have books in the target learning language--Spanish, and even fewer have non-fiction books for children at home! With a subscription to Scholastic Magazine, each one of my students will take home a 4-page, color-paper magazine in Spanish each week.

In class, we will read the magazines together, highlight and circle keywords, and learn more about the science or social studies concept featured in videos that are included in the subscription.

Then, students can take the magazines home and share with families all they've learned.

In addition, when asked to do nightly reading, or to practice looking for Spanish high-frequency words at home, children can use this tool to successfully complete assignments. They'll experience how fun non-fiction reading can be! Finally, families that don't speak Spanish can use this tool to support their child's Spanish language development in the home and learn a few Spanish words along with their child!

Finally, Scholastic magazine's engaging and high-quality videos and lessons accessible with the online subscription capture student interest and broaden their understanding of what they read in the text. The online and text subscription form an integral part of our shared reading and science learning all year. We can't wait to get reading!
