This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC, where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, all students with or without Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are provided a positive learning environment that addresses both their academic and social-emotional needs as well as embrace their strengths; while giving them a sense of belonging.
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and will benefit tremendously from non-fiction leveled books as well as literacy manipulatives and games in the kindergarten classroom.
It should be noted, however, that all of our students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and have so much opportunity for growth and the potential for excellence if provided good, daily instruction with the appropriate resources!
In my opinion, every kindergarten classroom should be equipped with a set of non-fiction leveled books. Frequently, these books are used for guided reading. This approach recognizes that a wide range of reading abilities exist within any grade level and/or age group. In my classroom, students rotate from one literacy center to another literacy center with one of the centers being guided reading with the teacher.
These non-fiction leveled books build students’ confidence while increasing both their reading comprehension and fluency (speed), while providing these same students with engaging books that provides lots of sight word practice.
In addition, these non-fiction books support classroom instruction in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and close reading of the text. Finally, using these non-fiction books will help my students with early print concepts. These print concepts include one-to-one correspondence, reading left to right, and return sweep; as well as reading from top to bottom; recognition of words versus letters; and being able to identify the cover and back of the book.
Finally, the literacy manipulatives (sight word magnets and sight word rings) will be used to support students in other literacy centers. Magnets will be placed on a giant white board easel for students to write short sentences using the magnets; and the sight word rings will be placed at student tables for support during writing exercises. Often times, young students have difficulty remembering how to spell these essential words. On the other hand, the games (snap and build sight words and write and wipe sight word practice cards) will be used to reinforce learning during small group instruction and/or one on one (student/teacher); or can be used as stand alone literacy centers.
