My students need engaging non-fiction texts in order to be able to develop critical thinking skills that will advance both their IEP (Individual Education Plan) goals and ESL (English as Second Language) reading levels.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students arrive at our "highly impacted" Title 1 school like kids all over the country: eager to learn and joyful at recess.
The difference is that many of their families struggle with food insecurity, unemployment, and providing the basic necessities of clothing and shelter.
For most, school is the very best part of their day. All the students in my resource classroom have IEPs (Individual Education Programs) based on their abilities and need specialized and differentiated instruction to achieve grade level competence.
My Project
The "Who Would Win?" non-fiction leveled texts by Jerry Pallotta (illustractions by Rob Bolster) provide compelling content which students will use to compare various strengths and weaknesses of prehistoric as well as modern day insects and animals.
My students who are learning English as a second language will have a chance to develop their oral language skills as well as address specific literacy goals in their Individual Learning Plans by debating which of two featured creatures would survive a battle.
Debating the merits of two compelling competitors will give students the chance to develop critical thinking skills, note-taking, and will encourage close reading of non-fiction texts.
