Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine only learning about historical events and science concepts from the TV or from a social studies book? Without these resources that is the fate of the students in my classroom.

The students in our school have a high interest in learning but they do not know where to access the materials they need in order to broaden their horizons.

My students have questions but are unsure how to find the answers. Our school is urban and in a high poverty area. Most of my students do not have the means to get to the public library because it is 4-5 miles from their house and their family does not have a car or their parents are not available to take them due to their work schedule.

My Project

With the Scholastic News Magazines the students will be able to read about current events in a way they are interested in and can understand. The magazines have on-line resources and videos to help bring in technology. There are writing prompts and math questions that are all based on current events to help students recognize the real life value of what they are learning. The non-fiction book sets will allow the students to access knowledge about topics in science and history at their reading level. The students will be able to work together and with me to understand these topics using high interest books. The non-fiction question cards will allow the students to practice their writing on topics they normally aren't comfortable writing about. Students love write narratives and fantasy stories, these cards will help them love to write non-fiction.

This project is so important because multiple exposures to this content is the only way that these students will become well rounded in understanding the world around them.

By 5th grade these students know how to read and they were interested in great fiction stories. As they mature we need to get them used to reading non-fiction material because from this point forward that is what the majority of their reading material will be.
