My Project

Many children who are curious about the world come to non-fiction sources for answers. The average classroom is greatly lacking in up-to-date, quality non-fiction resources that engage young learners. The DK series are colorful, easy to understand, and packed with multitudes of fascinating and inspiring information.

Our classroom is in a very rural area of Maine - most of our students have little access to libraries, the internet, or even transportation beyond the boundaries of their towns.

By providing rich texts on a variety of subjects, we can foster a wider world view, and inspire our students to really dig in to the possibilities of what they are capable of.

I know that as a child - I would spend countless hours poring over the non-fiction books that we had - they eventually inspired me to travel, to see and experience new things firsthand, to wonder... In turn, this action inspired me to teach as a way to give back to my community and the world at large. It was a curiosity inspired by books that ultimately lead me to a rewarding career and still even more curious life. I hope to do the same for my students.

We will use these books in our daily research projects, teachable moments, and free choice time. They will be displayed around the room to encourage students to browse, learn, and dream big. I hope to have a room filled with books that engage every type of learner and appeal to a wide variety of interests. Wouldn't you love to be in a classroom like that?
