My Students
We are so tired of test prep! My class needs an exciting way to improve reading comprehension. The students are so bored (with good reason) of dull reading passages that are only used to get them ready for the state test. Please, help make reading fun again.
My students attend public school in a low-income urban area.
Even though they are going into third grade, many of them are reading below grade level. Although reading may be a struggle, they are highly motivated to become successful. Yet, with the pressure of the state ELA test, reading is becoming a stressful experience. I pride myself in giving the students a love of reading, so it is important for me to find a way for the kids to read for enjoyment while still working on comprehension skills. I believe "Weekly Reader" will help me to do just that.
My Project
It is such a joy watching my students grabbing wonderful books from our classroom library. They read fairy tales, realistic fiction, historical fiction, fables, and poetry books. The only problem is my non-fiction is hardly touched. The books are just not as exciting to them. Yet "Weekly Reader" has found a way to make non-fiction motivating to read! This will be a great way for us to come together as a class and enjoy non-fiction. We will read the magazines as a whole group, small group, and sometimes with a partner. The students will be informed about the world around them and they will learn non-fiction text features without being bored. Being an informed and proficient reader of non-fiction is a key ingredient for them to be successful adults.
By providing my students with "Weekly Readers" you will be enhancing their reading comprehension skills as well as their knowledge of what's happening around the world.
Learning to read informational pieces will help them to become informed adults with better decision making skills.
