This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When was the last time you read a fiction book for fun? Most of what adults read is non-fiction. So, it is important to start them reading non-fiction at a young age. Why not teach them to read with non-fiction? Not only will they practice reading, they will learn something in the process.

I have 25 students in my class.

14 of them are English language learners and the majority are on free or reduced price lunch. My students are from a Title I school. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged circumstances. Even though they face economic challenges, they come to school each day eager to learn new things.

My Project

I am requesting 4 different kits that can be used for guided reading or in centers. The first kit is a set of 6 Animal books. This kit includes books on insects, birds, mammal and reptiles. The next kit is on Highlighting Skills. The kit comes with 4 cards with non-fiction text. There are 8 different cards. The kids can highlight vocabulary, grammar and comprehension. The next kit is Small Group Comprehension Folders. Each skill-building folder includes 6 copies of 7 different folders that cover a variety of important non-fiction text structures, such as cause and effect, and compare and contrast. They include high interest passages, loaded with fun-facts and plenty of photos and illustrations to keep kids interested. The last kit is on building fluency. There are 80 cards, 10 different levels with 8 cards for each level. The kids practice the text on the card and then time each other. It comes with timers that kids will love to use. This will help their reading fluency.

It is very important to expose kids to non-fiction at an early age.

Why not teach them how to read using non-fiction? All of these sets will greatly add to my classroom literacy program.
