My Students

My students are an energetic group who are eager to learn and love reading. My students live in a large urban district in southeast Michigan and most come from low-income households. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and our classroom is their only source for high-quality and engaging books.

My Project

This fall many of my 2nd grade students, due to the COVID pandemic, have not been in a formal school setting since Kindergarten. As a result, the majority of my students are reading significantly behind grade level and have had limited access to books and print reading materials due to virtual learning.

Our school does not have a library, so I want to have a well stocked classroom library to allow my students to take books home to read and enjoy!

Reading at home is critical to school success and I want to set my students up to be proficient readers. I also want my students to have books to borrow and take home so they can learn that reading is not just for school, that reading is fun and enjoyable! I want my students to be able to read for enjoyment as well as for learning purposes.
