My Students

I teach in a Title 1 school that serves families in the low-income/high poverty group. Approximately 12% of the school population receive Special Education Services due to diagnosed cognitive challenges. To facilitate their academic success, we need to provide accommodations to remove barriers to concept and skills acquisition, as well as evaluation success, brought about by their disabilities.

Failure is not an option: My students are diagnosed with Specific Learning Disabilities, in the areas of Attention, Visual and/or Auditory Processing that impact their ability to access instruction without additional supports and accommodations.

Creating a learning environment where targeted needs are met through differentiated and accommodated instruction is vital in helping my students overcome their disabilities, and become successful in the general education setting.

My Project

Learning Disabilities come with a myriad of challenges that make it very difficult for children to learn. Among these challenges is the presence of Attention Deficit Disorder, manifested in difficulty staying focused on prolonged tasks such as reading, writing and testing. As their teacher, I help control the environment to make it more conducive to learning and evaluation. One way to do this is to minimize auditory stimulus during certain work times. Using noise blockers or noise reducing headphones will decrease potential distractors when the students are engaged in testing, individual writing activities or when simply doing independent work/practice. Less distraction paves the way for a more suitable learning environment, better testing conditions and greater successes.
