My Project

As a school counselor at a school labeled as a lower socioeconomic school, I take pride in the culture and the community of our school. I want my students to come to school and feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged, not just by the adults but also by other students.

I have noticed this year that some of our students are struggling with confidence, and other students are having trouble making good choices.

I don't want the culture of our school to be students putting each other down; our culture should be focused on kindness.

October is anti-bullying month, and, as a community service project within our school, I have challenged our students to commit random acts of kindness. Whether that means writing notes to special people in their lives with fancy Frixion pens, leaving a gift at a classmates desk, giving a bag of Takis to someone who doesn't have a snack, sending a post card to someone they've been mean to in the past, or putting an encouraging sticker on a friend's work, I want to see our school's community get better by seeing a cultural change.

Through this project, I hope to show how important community service is. We may not be serving many people outside our school, but, if our students feel more encouraged and become kinder people, they will be able to take that kindness into the world after they leave our school.

With this project, I hope to help our school community by instilling kindness in our next generation. They will also be able to learn better if they feel supported at school by both their teachers and their classmates. Our school culture is something that will leave lasting impressions on our students. This project will help that impression be positive.
