My Students

EAST, a class for critical thinking skills and self-directed learning, enables students to collaborate with community partners, peers, and clients, and use technology to solve problems in our own school, community, state, and even the world.

To paraphase William Shakespeare, "tho we are little, we are fierce!

We are a small school, K-12 all on one campus, and in a very rural area. Most of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds, and our school currently has a grant to feed all of our students a free breakfast and lunch. Many families struggle to provide basic necessities, and access to higher-end technology is very limited. The EAST classroom experience affords our student population an experience they may not have at home and not often in the regular classroom setting.

My Project

An unmanned aerial system will be used to take video as well as still pictures of an African American cemetery that predates the Civil War, and had returned to nature.

An interactive simulation can be made of this pre-Civil War cemetery to allow families and descendents "access" to the cemetery that is not accessible as it is on private property.

My EAST students enlisted the help of our Student Council and the Forestry Division, spent four days cutting, cleaning, and chipping debris, and are ready to map the cemetery to make an interactive website that allows people to be able to see a digital reconstruction of the cemetery giving viewers an idea and experience of walking through the cemetery to discover their ancestry.

This interactive site will be featured in the Ozarks Foothills African American Museum, dedicated to area families and their descendants, many slaves before the Civil War.
