Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 500 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in business, promotes college and career readiness, offers year-round experiences that include many work related trips, workshops, business based competitions, work-based and service learning opportunities, mentoring, career counseling and internships for all our hard working students including those economically disadvantaged .

My students are hard-working and dedicated and try to take every opportunity to succeed.

My Project

Although my students are hard working they often lack monetary resources for more nutritional on the go choices for breakfast. Often when fighting the struggles of the MTA just to get to school they meals are skipped and/or poor choices made. I want more for my students.

Providing a small breakfast bar in classroom will provide many benefits, that include improving academic performance, attendance, and engagement, and reducing hunger and food insecurity.

Healthier choices include lower sugar cereal and oatmeal, warm cocoa, assortment of granola bars, nuts, and hot soup. These selections are healthier on the go options that will allow them to grow throughout the day, as well as teach them how making better food choices will make them better students, productive employees and lead to a higher quality of life, now and in the future.
