My Students

As a teacher for a special day program, I have an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of my students. We are 11 students in a CORE autism program at a low income school. Our grades span from Tk-2nd grade. We follow the same curriculum as our regular peers but also emphasize learning social skills and school routines. We need many different ways to learn including technology, hands-on materials, and opportunities to move.

Despite our label of having autism, we choose to break stereotypes by creating a family of empathy and working as a team.

My students often have difficulty communicating their needs and focusing. I am committed to help them make breakthroughs to continue their education and work along side their similarly aged peers.

My Project

My students are developmentally young. Although they are able to read at grade level, they have difficulty holding a pencil or demonstrating their understanding of letter sounds. The magnetic letters will support students in practice and as an alternative assessment of their knowledge.

My younger students in Kinder deserve equal opportunities to learn as well.

With the difficulty to attend to a whole group lesson or paper-pencil task, theses materials will give them a chance to blend sounds together and stay engaged for longer periods. Furthermore, the blending materials will provide opportunities for my students to move to reduce the amount of off-task behaviors and increase skills.

Lastly, our timer from last year broke and we have no visual timer to use to support students. The green, yellow, and red timer will help students visualize and prepare for the next transition.
