Worksheets, worksheets, worksheets.. Not any more...it's time to get excited about math!! I teach second grade at a Title One School where 90 percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Out of my twenty-one students a third of them are Hispanic. With my diverse population, math centers are a must when it comes to teaching and reinforcing math concepts. Throughout the day we spend an hour and a half on math so it is very important to make the most of this time.

I recently looped to second grade. but I have found that I don't have lots of manipulatives or activities to help my children with their second grade objectives. With the wide range of diversity in my classroom I have found that my students learn best through the use of hands on activities and games. They are especially fond of math centers and I am continuously trying to find new fun ways for my students to become engaged in their learning.

The children will start to learn their basic multiplication facts using the multiplication puzzles. They will match the picture to the multiplication fact. The children will review second grade math concepts such as mental math, problem solving, money and time using the math game show. During small group math time students will use the independent math centers (one and two) The students can use the centers independently or with a partner. They will work on areas such as problem solving, money, fractions and time with center number one. Math center two has activities for measurement, place value, graphing and geometry. These math centers are a great way to reinforce what we have already learned in class. The last math manipulative I would like to purchase is the Regrouping (Subtraction) Pocket Chart. It comes with numbers as well as base ten block cards to help them understand the concept of regrouping. It will be a valuable tool to help introduce the concept of regrouping to the whole class. Then later it can be used with small groups of children to help reinforce this objective.

One of our favorite times of the day is Small Group Math time where they choose a partner and a math center to work in for the afternoon. I try to find centers that reinforce the objectives that we have been working on in class. By purchasing the following manipulatives and games, you will be helping my students reach their math goals for second grade and helping them prepare for third grade.
