Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the magic that you felt when you were first learning to read? Do you remember how successful you felt as your voice steadily began to match your teacher's reading voice? I am the teacher of 12 special education students who are struggling to discover this joy for themselves.

My students are Learning Disabled and/or Speech and Language Impaired and many of them are also English Language Learners.

My students are curious and often take over the reins of their learning. They have lead inquiry studies on animals, Native Americans, Electricity and Japanese Culture. However, their engagement during reading pales in comparison to their content area studies. They love learning but because their disabilities are language based, they don't enjoy reading independently. Many of them have expressed to me that they don't like the sound of their own voice when they read. They would rather listen to an adult or a more experienced reader because they sound like "robots." Although my students are 4th and 5th graders, about half of my class has reading levels that correlate more closely to 1st through 3rd grades. Fluency and expression are crucial to their progress. My students show the greatest progress when they are engaged and motivated to put in extra practice.

My Project

Last year, I had great success in increasing their engagement by doing shared reading of lyrics from pop culture music. After we had interpreted the lyrics and practiced reading them fluently, we listened to the music and sang along. My students were so excited to participate and I saw a reflection in the reading assessments. They love music and hold onto things they hear more than once. This year I recorded my students storytelling and had them use these videos to help them draft their own stories. Again, their engagement was high and the quality of their stories was amazing. This got me thinking that I should use their auditory strengths to help them with their reading fluency. What if they were able to record themselves reading a familiar text? What if they could listen to themselves and then try it again? This could be an independent reading center in my room as a follow-up to shared reading. Personal Digital voice recorders would make this possible.

This independent center would build student confidence, motivation, reading engagement and reading achievement.

Students would be able to track their own progress and recordings could be saved to show progress to parents and administrators. There would be no more reading robots in our room! Most of all, my students would learn that the strongest reading voice should be their own!
