Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are our inspiration!

Our school is located in West Harlem (Title I District).

Our student population is diverse and includes Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian), Biracial, ENL (English as a New Language), and IEP (Individualized Education Program) students. Diversity within our school is something we embrace and nurture.

My Project

Recently, our school became a split site school. Our Pre-K - 2nd Graders are in our Lower School and 3rd - 8th grade is in our Upper School. As our Lower School is brand new and still growing, our library does not have furniture for books. I am currently using milk crates as book bins for the students. I want the students to browse for books, but the problem is that the milk crates stacked on top of each other are can be dangerous. They could fall on top of the kids and that is my biggest fear. I just want them to be able to find books independently that they love.

By helping my classroom get shelving for our books in the school library, the students will have a safe and comfortable space to search for books to grow their love for reading.
