My Students

My students are young, enthusiastic, and funny, but also misunderstood and sometimes labeled according to mistakes they've made. They meet every challenge with creativity, imagination, and hard work. My students long to see themselves represented in a positive light in the books they read. It is a beautiful experience to watch my students connect with literature.

My Project

The "No More Dead Poets!" project will allow my students to experience poetry written by poets living today. My project includes books by poets like Clint Smith and Sarah Kaye, who write about people, places, and events relevant to my students lives. I have also requested ten copies of the journal created by award-winning novelist Angie Thomas, to inspire students to find their inner voices.

Teaching Living Poets will help my students to see that they can be writers, too, that they can also write their truth.

I hope to start a writing club at my school and the books and journals requested in this project will definitely become prized possessions for my students.
