Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our classroom involves diving into history in almost any way you could imagine: we use texts, presentations, films, pictures, video clips, websites and anything else that might get us excited about learning how we got to where we are today as a society.

My school is a Title I school in NYC with a vibrant and multicultural student body.

We battle against all of the larger issues in our society as they play out in education, in order to ensure that the students have as many opportunities as they can to tune in to academics and get focused and interested in something they can take forward with them to create a future, and sense of confidence and belonging in the world. The students love to learn when we can turn them on to the interesting things that are out there, and that takes resources.

My Project

The laptop will be used to power our LCD projector, which we use on a daily and constant basis. It anchors our discussions with image and question prompts, it centers our seminars with PowerPoint illustrations, and it gives us life size photos, texts, and films & video clips to interact with. It is used for student presentations and class-centered web activities as well. The students' classroom experience will be enriched because we will be able to access the best and most relevant materials in our exploration of history. Nothing says boring in the modern world to teenagers more than a piece of chalk and a blackboard, and the laptop affords us the opportunity to move as far away from that unpleasant (but fairly recent) memory. It helps to improve literally everything we do as a class.

Our school is sorely lacking in terms of technology and modern equipment that are so important for injecting a sense of relevance and importance to the materials we cover in our history.

Without technology we lose the opportunity to explore many of the best historical materials in a way that the students will enjoy and relate to. Our students deserve every opportunity to succeed, and the technology in the classroom helps us ensure that they will have the most interesting experience possible.
