My Students

A school should be a place where kids can grow academically and socially in a positive atmosphere. Yet some kids are fearful and fail to thrive because of bullying.

My second grade students are a diverse group of kids in California from many cultures and family backgrounds.

At this age, they are learning how to manage and maintain friendships while trying to find acceptance and learning to accept each other. As they work on managing their feelings and impulses they struggle with making positive choices. Bullying takes place as they try to handle conflict within themselves and with each other. They need instruction on how to be the best friend they can be, even when they don't agree with each other, without using bullying behaviors.

My Project

To stop bullying, I have requested books to help me have a good understanding of how bullying takes place in schools. More books give in depth understanding of how bullying takes place differently between girls and boys. Teacher materials will help me present lessons to students teaching them how to handle bullying situations whether they are being bullied or they are bystanders. Books for them to read with familiar characters will help them identify and talk about bullying. We will perform plays with puppets to help us act out bullying behavior and demonstrate how to deal with it appropriately. We will put up posters around the class to help remind us of the strategies we have learned. Games and activities will help us remember and practice anti-bullying strategies.

This program for educating students early will help them make good choices.

They will be able to identify and deal with bullying with positive strategies. They will be empowered to deal with bullying and possibly even prevent it.
