Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

After Finding Nemo, many students became interested in marine life. In an effort to show a different environment, I want to expose my students to the desert. I researched many different species and found that the Russian tortoise is adaptable as well as social. I would like to create a tortoise habitat in my classroom, where all 20 students will learn not only how to care for the tortoise but how light, water, and food affect its survival. I teach at a Title 1 school in which many of my students could not afford exotic pets therefore I know I will be exposing them to something new and exciting. In addition to being responsible for feeding and taking care of the tortoise, my 3rd graders will be exposed to the desert habitat and what is necessary to maintain a dry environment. They will also be able to experiment with light and get a deeper understanding of the spectrum. Students will be able to use math in monitoring the temperature, creating charts, and even using it for probability. For health, the tortoise could be used as an example of how we need a well balanced diet and exercise just as the tortoise does. After school, the students would be able to take the tortoise out and allow him to roam about our grass area which is right in front of our classroom. For writing, we could use the tortoise as our main character in writing a narrative or even a fantasy story. The possibilities for the use of our tortoise are only limited by my student's imagination and most third graders have vivid imaginations. Of course the tortoise's safety would always be my first priority when using him/her as an example. Thank you for your time and consideration.
