Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an intermediate school where 68% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students face daily challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many come from single parent households and have not experienced much positivity in their lives. My classroom is a safe, stable, and nurturing place for them to be.

My students are strong and are overcoming a great deal.

Hurricane Harvey continues to impact my students. The flood waters may have receded, but a number of my students are still living in hotels or with extended families. This continues to cause additional emotional harm.

Some say the challenges they face may prevent my students from ever getting ahead, but I see it as a challenge to ensure I instill in them a sense of pride, purpose, and belief in themselves and the good that is in the world.

My Project

Having extra iPads in the classroom for students to use will enable them to keep up with classwork on those occasions when theirs has been forgotten at home, or is being repaired at school. Sometimes students have not updated their computers and it takes 10-15 minutes to do so. It's wasted class time. With these extra iPads in the classroom I can give them something to use in the meantime. If a student does not have some type of computer when the rest of the class is working on an online assignment, they can become behind in the lesson, or act as a distraction to other students.

Independent practice is key for student success.

Websites like No Red Ink or Newsla provide opportunities to engage my students while I target skills with smaller groups. Similar websites offer a myriad of choices for assigned practice or individual research work. When students are engaged in meaningful activities, their interest is peaked and individual growth will occur.
