Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Such is beauty ever, here nor there, now nor then, but wherever there is a soul to be admired." ~ Henry David Thoreau I teach my students that "looks" and materialistic items fade, but who we are deep inside is what will be remembered, and to always be someone you want to be remembered.

My school is a dual language school located just northwest of downtown Chicago.

We are 80% Hispanic, 17% Black, and 93% of our students are low income students. We have many students who are bilingual speakers, with their native language being Spanish. Our parents are hard workers, but often have to work the 2nd and 3rd shifts at their jobs and many of my 6th grade students spend their afternoons and night time helping take care of their younger brothers and sisters. We are lucky that our students make good choices for their lives and we have no students affiliated with any gangs. They are enthusiastic to learn and our biggest issue is funding and having enough technology available for our students. Due to many of our hard working parents, our parents are unable to create fundraisers that raise the type of funds needed to keep the school up to date with the technology and books that our students deserve.

My Project

Our school has purchased the Study Island program. Research has shown that this online reading and math program if used three times a week, can have great improvements on students' reading and math scores. About 60% of my students read below grade level. Another plus is that there are many books that interest them that they can read on the kindle. I only have so much personal money to spend on books that interest them. By offering a device where we can access online books for free through Amazon, I am keeping up their motivation for reading and it will open their eyes to so many more stories out there, that they would not have previously read.

My students need to read to succeed in their daily lives, especially as they grow older and need to apply to jobs and schools.

It is also essential they enjoy reading and use the stories they read to motivate or inspire their own lives to always choose a positive path and succeed in achieving their goals. Using the kindles, the students not only get to consistently use our Study Island program, but they will be motivated to read because there are so many books they can choose from online.
