I have some pretty awesome 7th and 8th grade students! A lot of my students struggle with math or have low self worth concerning mathematics. I make it my mission to change their thinking. I provide learning opportunities for them to practice and improve in weak areas. While also helping others in areas where they are strong and confident. I enjoy getting student off of their cell phones and interacting with other students. During the year I love to have the students work on STEM projects.(Science Technology Engineering Math) For example, we build marble roller coasters, balloon cars, and cardboard games. I also encourage the students to play games such as dominoes, the game of Life, Monopoly, and others to create an environment of friendly fun.
"Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education" quote by Martin Luther King Jr.,has been a theme for me over 15 years.
I believe building character in today's youth is extremely important. During a project students were challenged to design and construct a shoe. Two students took the challenge farther than I could imagine and changed the whole learning environment of our class that year!
My Project
This project will allow students to have fun without cell phones. The students will be challenged with STEM projects and also enjoy playing classic board game. I have seen struggling students succeed with the projects that are planned. The students get to be creative and communicate with each other to solve problems. I think that the projects that we do represent real life! When given a challenge some students work to produce something they are proud of. Others want to take it home to spend more time working on it. Parents are thrilled to see their children interested in the projects instead of playing with video games.
