My Students

No bookmarks are required for these readers. My 7th graders are insatiable consumers of the written word, with the fastest readers averaging 2-3 books per week. To readers like these, no public school classroom library is big and varied enough to feed their voracious appetite for books.

My 7th graders and I take reading for pleasure and its benefits very seriously.

That is why we spend half of our English class engaged in silent reading and conferencing, and 30 minutes at home reading. We are eager to reach the state standard of reading at least 25 books this year. To do this, we have lists of books we would like to read, we create book recommendation illustrations for our walls, we form book clubs, we give book talks about our personal favorites, and we write letters to each other about what we’re reading and our reactions. These are students who walk in my door in the morning announcing a finished book, sharing a juicy part of a new read, or animatedly chatting about books with a friend. They write short stories and illustrate them on their own time. They are quirky, dramatic, curious, and ambitious. And sadly, they are attending a public school in an urban school system that is struggling to make ends meet. The school has not provided new books for many years.

My Project

The books on this list were chosen to appeal to my students. They are student and teacher-recommended, award-winning, varied in topic, and diverse in genre, reading level and main character backgrounds. These books will allow my students to continue to improve their reading stamina, their vocabulary, and their writing skills. They will also give my students access to important contemporary authors, as well as classic young adult titles. And most importantly, they will strengthen the resources of my classroom library so that each student will always be able to find a “just right” book.

We have become a community of readers eager to share our beloved reads with those around us.

As the leader of this reading community, it is my important task to make sure that as soon as a student returns a book to our classroom library, he or she is surrounded by engaging reads. If students come to the classroom library, pick through the shelves and bins, and walk away empty-handed, the reading momentum we have created will be lost.
