Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.

This has not hampered our students' eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teaching, but our school needs as much help as it can get.

Many of these students struggle to make it to class on time because they are trying to get their younger siblings ready for school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.

My Project

I am currently working with students during our lunch period to assist them with making predictions and inferences through the use of graphic novels.

I am trying to build a library that appeals to what my students are interested in.

Many of my students are loving reading "Bone". Other students have expressed interests in the "Diary" series. We currently use an online reader to help with some of the lower-level reading but my advanced reading level students are struggling with accessing books that they find appealing.

This project will help build my library so that students have more options to choose what they read.
