This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My TK class has been getting their hands dirty! We have a beautiful garden space that is under-used on our campus, so the TKers are sprucing it up! So far, I have been taking them out each day just to play and explore in the garden. Because nothing is currently planted, we just dig in the dirt and play. We recently received a donation of plant starts from the School Garden Network, and will be hosting a garden workday in April so that students can plant the donated starts shortly after. My hope is that our school garden space can become an outdoor classroom and students can use it for daily learning as well as play.

I have noticed how engaged students are when give the opportunity to learn outdoors.

Outdoor education also provides such rich experiential opportunities that will become students' background knowledge as they progress through school. In TK, we can achieve the majority of our standards while outside. From social emotional skills and story time to sensory play and fine motor practice, I would love to offer a full day outdoor program for these little learners. In order to make this outdoor classroom a reality, my students need appropriate clothing to be outside in any weather. There is a Scandinavian saying popular among outdoor educators that says there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Providing rain suits and boots for my students will ensure that they stay cozy and dry, and that we don't destroy all their clothing, when we are learning outside in wet days. I will keep this "class set" of outdoor gear at school so that it can be used daily and for years to come.
